Dr Boon Kua

Dr Boon Kua completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 1994 at the University of Queensland. He was accepted into the advanced training program for general surgery before commencing training in urology in 2002. He spent a year of his urologic training at the renowned Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) hospital in Sydney before returning to Queensland to complete his training. He was awarded his specialist qualification, FRACS (Urology) in 2005.

He received extensive training in open and laparoscopic surgeries in urologic cancers and was routinely performing laparoscopic (keyhole) surgeries for prostate cancers prior to transitioning to DaVinci robotic surgery in 2010. He undertook a certified training course in da Vinci robotic surgery at the Global Robotics Institute in Florida, USA prior to helping set up the da Vinci robotics program at the Wesley hospital in 2010.

With over 10 years of experience in da Vinci robotic surgery and almost 1500 cases as primary surgeon and proctor to urologists and trainees, Dr Kua is now one of the most experienced da Vinci robotic surgeons in the country. Dr Kua teaches Bond University medical students and helped establish Wesley Private Hospital’s urology multi disciplinary team meeting in which he regularly attends to discuss complex urologic oncology cases. He has published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals from collaboration with his peers.

Dr Kua is highly experienced in treating:
• Prostate brachytherapy for prostate cancer
• Prostate Nanoknife (ie. irreversible electroporation)
• Erectile dysfunction and stress urinary incontinence
• Penile prosthesis

Dr Kua’s ultimate goal is for men not to be left with disabilities negatively impacting their quality of life following successful prostate cancer treatment.

Dr Anojan (Ano) Navaratnam is a consultant Urologist who is a fully credentialed urological surgeon with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.  He is a robotic surgeon with interests in urologic oncology and endourology.

After growing up in Brisbane, Dr Navaratnam moved to Sydney to complete medical school where he graduated with honours from the University of New South Wales.  He then returned to Brisbane and completed his formal urological training.

Sub Specialist Interests:

  • Urologic cancer
  • Minimally invasive surgery – robotic surgery, laparoscopy
  • Complex kidney stone disease
  • Surgery for kidney stones – Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), laser surgery
  • Treatment for enlargement of the prostate including Rezum, Urolift, and Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)
  • Placement of spacing hydrogel (SpaceOAR) prior to radiation treatment for prostate cancer
  • General urology and men’s health

Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgeries:

  • Robotic partial nephrectomy
  • Robotic and laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for kidney cancer (including cancers with extension into the vena cava)
  • Robotic radical prostatectomy with nerve sparing for prostate cancer
  • Robotic radical cystectomy with urinary tract diversion for bladder cancer
  • Robotic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for testicular and other cancers
  • Robotic varicocoele repair

He is the only surgeon in Queensland to have experience in the use of robotics for complex surgery including vena cava tumour thrombus surgery and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection.  He is the only surgeon in Queensland to have completed fellowship training in Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) for benign prostate hyperplasia.

Dr Navaratnam is passionate about the health of Queenslanders and ensuring the best outcomes for his patients.  He wants to ensure patients in regional Australia have access to state of the art urological care.  He has previously spent four years of medical and surgical training in regional towns including Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton and Mackay.

Dr Nigel Dunglison

Dr Dunglison underwent 2 years of sub-specialist training in ‘Reconstructive and Prosthetic’ urological surgery at the Institute of Urology, University College London Hospitals under the mentorship of the internationally renowned reconstructive urologist Professor A R Mundy.

In 2002, Dr Dunglison returned to Brisbane, having been appointed Director of Urology at the Royal Brisbane Womens’ Hospital. He has developed the Urology Department to incorporate Robotic, Laparoscopic, Laser, Prosthetic, Reconstructive and Flexible endoscopic surgeries along with Prostate MRI and Brachytherapy. Concurrently Dr Dunglison has continued to develop his own comprehensive Reconstructive + Prosthetic private urological surgery incorporating regular international mentorships and training.

Dr Dunglison completed his medical degree at the University of QLD in 1989 and received his Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2000.

Dr Dunglison is Director of Urology at RBWH (2002- ) and has expanded this department to 10 consultants, 4 registrars and 4 specialist nurses supported by 3 administrative staff. This department is responsible for tertiary referrals from across Queensland.

He is currently the Chairman of the Northern Section of the Urological Society of Australasia representing Queensland Urologists. He has previously served a three year term as Queensland Chairman of the Training, Education and Assessment Committee.

Dr Dunglison has facilitated research undertaken through RBWH, University of Queensland and Wesley Research Institute.
